During research dives in Indonesia (Sulawesi and Bali), Mark D. Norman, Julian Finn and Tom Tregenza discovered a new specie of octopus. The 'mimic octopus' can display a repertoire of postures and body patterns, several of which are clearly impersonations of venomous animals co-occurring in this habitat. The octopus decides on the appropriate form of mimicry to use depending on the nature of the threat: it has been seen posing as a lion fish, a sea snake and a sole.
