Hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking) is a technique used to drill shale gas, by cracking walls of a 1-2 km deep well using small explosive charges and high pressure water containing chemicals and sand that keeps open cracks.
One day Josh Fox's father received a letter from a natural gas and oil industry proposing him to exploit gas on his land. Since Delaware is not known to be an oil producing state Josh's father asked his son to have a look at this. Josh Fox realized a movie with everything he finds out.
The exploitation of schale gas causes many problems :
- Tap water catches on fire!
The main problem is that Dick Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton and Vice-President in the Bush administration passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This bill exempted fluids used in the natural gas extraction process of Hydraulic fracturing from protections under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and CERCLA. It created a loophole that exempts companies drilling for natural gas from disclosing the chemicals involved in fracking operations that would normally be required under federal clean water laws. The loophole is commonly known as the "Halliburton loophole".
The second problem is the huge amount of natural gas trapped in these shale basins, sometimes called an "ocean of gas". It's sounds like a good news to have huge reserve of fossil energy but for many country it turns out to be a nightmare. The oil & gas companies already have that spark in their eyes and they gonna extract this gas no matter what! Aubrey McClendon, chief executive of major natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp, said the US is “entering an age of new gas abundance and we will have enough natural gas to meet all areas of new demand [...] Shale gas makes the US the Saudi Arabia of natural gas...”
In a capitalist world : greed is good, and thanks to Dick Cheney greed is legal!
